Nick And Annalain
The History of the Glenariff Gloster Stud

The Glenariff Stud is the result of a lifetime dedicated to breeding excellence. Established by
Nick and Annalain Barrett, Glenariff has become one of the most respected names in the Gloster Fancy Worldwide, built upon more than seventy years of careful selection, sound breeding principles, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Nick's journey with Gloster canaries began in
1953, when, as a schoolboy, he purchased his first birds using money earned from paper and milk rounds. From these modest beginnings grew a lifelong passion for breeding and exhibiting Glosters. Together, Nick and Annalain combined this enthusiasm with the stockmanship and breeding principles they developed through their involvement with pedigree livestock.

A defining moment came in
1969, when the Barretts acquired a small number of exceptional Glosters from the renowned stud of Miss Davies and Mrs Kathleen Elwell in Derbyshire. Blended with outstanding birds previously obtained from John Thornton and Gordon Adamson, these foundation birds established the Glenariff Stud. Remarkably, no outside bloodlines have been introduced since, with every generation being developed through careful selection and home breeding.

Over the decades, the Glenariff stud have achieved success at the highest level, winning major awards at National Shows, All Gloster Shows, and specialist exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom. One of the stud's greatest achievements came in
1983, when Glenariff won Best Gloster, Best Canary, Best Flighted Canary, and Best White Canary at the National Show.

The Glenariff name has also gained international recognition. Nick and Annalain have judged Glosters throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, North America, South Africa, and beyond, while the Glenariff stud have found homes with breeders across the world. Through these experiences, Nick and Annalain have forged lasting friendships and helped promote the Gloster Fancy internationally.

At the heart of Glenariff has always been a simple philosophy: begin with outstanding stock, breed with a clear objective, and never compromise on quality. These principles have remained unchanged for more than half a century and continue to underpin every pedigree enterprise carrying the Glenariff name.

Today, Glenariff is recognised not only for its success on the show bench but also for its contribution to the preservation and advancement of the Gloster Fancy. The Barretts' dedication, knowledge, and passion have established a legacy that continues to inspire breeders both in the UK and around the world.
